The Prettiest Angel

Last Christmas Eve I kinda lost control
Had to release my mind to keep my ahold my soul
I was a roller coaster filled with dynamite
Headlong hurled into the endless white
On my fifth snow angel in the neighbors yard
In a ratty robe and rubber clogs
Had to bribe the sherriff and con the ambulance
Which took up seven tenths of my remaining sense

Sanctuary at the midnight mass
I had to find my Lord
I had to warm my ass
Me and a Cherokee Woman
we sparked the final war
We didn’t know how come
but we knew what for

Freedom
a song for a season of light
A season
I’m here to redeem my one holy

Up on the stage the choir
All turn their voices to the skies
In sentimental intervals of grace
And in the failing light
I kneel and pray and spy her eyes
I look right at her she looks right at me
Don’t live on words alone she said

It’s a world of puppets I can see the strings
Things fall apart that’s the way of things
You know the stuff of stars it's only toast and tea
Another log on the fire from last year’s tree
Seven and change goes in no time flat
I need my snow-globe Santa gone jolly fat
I need my Christmas eve so I can plainly see
The prettiest angel smiling back at me

She heard me pleadin
I long for a season of light
A season
Turns to reveal one holy
Night
